Antioxidant Properties of Acai Berries

There is a long list of benefits which are derived from acai berry fruit. But the main benefit is that it has a very high proportion of antioxidants in it. A study has revealed that its antioxidant content comes at a very high scoring as compared to other different fruit juices. It is just behind acerola, grapes, strawberry and mango as far as its antioxidant content is concerned.

There is anthocyanins content in the powder of dried acai berry skin and fruit but the anthocyanins contain only 10% content of the total antioxidant capacity of the fruit. The powdered preparations of acai berry are also reported to have twelve flavonoid types of compounds, such as orientin, deixyhexose, taxifolin, homoorientin, scoparin, isovitexin, proanthocyanidins, and small proportions of resveratrol.

Out of various varieties of acai berry, white acai berry did not display any antioxidant properties while the purple blue variety, which is usually used for commercial purposes as well, showed excellent benefits, against peroxyl radicals, good fighting capacity against peroxynitrite, and low benefits against hydroxyl radicals.

In a study conducted, it was found that freeze-dried acai powder has good antioxidant capacity against peroxyl radicals and superoxide and a bit mild capacity against hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite.

The acai berry seed also has antioxidant capacity to fight against peroxyl radicals just like the pulp of the fruit, and has very high antioxidant capacity to fight with hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite.

When commercial juice mixes of acai berry were compared to other fruit juices, red wine, and tea to find out which one has more antioxidant capacities, acai berry was found quite same to cranberry and black berry, and lower than pomegranate juice, blue berry juice, red wine, and concord grape juice.

Studies have revealed that the acai berry juice increases the antioxidant capacity of blood just within two hours after consuming it.
