Awareness Of The Root Cause Of Obesity May Help To Reduce Weight Gain

In a world in which obesity is reaching epidemic proportions, it is becoming absolutely crucial that the science and health professionals take a serious look at the causes of obesity in order to bring a halt to the increasing numbers of morbidly obese individuals.

Health concerns about rising costs involving heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure and other obesity related health issues are taking center stage in the medical field. As the medical arena focuses more and more on the rising numbers of obese and morbidly obese patients, the urgency with identifying the causes of obesity also increases.

As the number of obese Americans continues to rise, with roughly sixty percent of adults above their medically defined ?ideal? weight and over 13 percent of children and young adults reaching the level of obesity, concerns for health care also rise. These statistics have nearly tripled since 1980, a number that is alarming to the government and health professionals.

Purely from a medical standpoint, it is tremendously expensive to treat obesity and the problems resulting from it, and it’s creating an additional burden on the medical community. Since obesity can result in many problems and even death, it’s results are disturbing. The fact is that it is possible to avoid obesity related death, if the person were willing to try for a weight loss of about 16 percent or more of their overall body weight. Today many different groups and professionals are making major efforts to isolate the causes of obesity so that obesity related deaths might be prevented.

In older times, the main reason obesity occurred was heredity: those who had overweight family members tend to be overweight themselves, and have to fight hard to lose weight. This genetic cause for obesity has been examined closely for a long time, but thus far a solution to overcome the heredity/obesity connection hasn’t been found. While it’s clear genetics can play a major role, it is not to blame for the quickly rising obesity numbers in America.

What we do know is that a person’s eating patterns are clearly a major causative factor in obesity. It sounds really easy, perhaps, to just “change the way you eat”, but as anyone who has ever been on a diet will tell you: it’s easier said than done.

Even if a person is told that , beyond question, they are obese because they are making bad food choices, it is still hard to break old habits. After all, people develop their food consumption routines over a whole lifetime, including childhood . These long standing habits are very challenging to break,just like with smokers. Think of how hard it is for people to quit smoking, even when they know it can cost them their life.

Obesity doesn?t happen over night and as the body gets bigger, the eating habits that have been established are very difficult to break. Diet companies such as L.A. Weight loss, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers and the many other different weight loss programs created, all work to educate and train overweight people about eating differently.

Although many obese individuals will begin a weight loss program, they frequently fall short in the area of putting the program into practice long term. This simple fact indicates that while we may know the reason for obesity, but that does not mean that is enough. To make a true change, obese people will have to have good information and excellent guidance, as well as a strong self-resolve.
